php4ikzj5Arsenal went top of the Premier League, at least until Manchester United and Chelsea both play their weekend games, when they beat West Ham United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

It was Arsenal’s sixth successive league win and they moved on to 67 points from 31 matches to lead the standings for the first time since January.

Manchester United, who host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, have 66 points from 30 games, followed by Chelsea who have 64 points from 29 and will visit Blackburn Rovers.

Arsenal scored through Denilson after only five minutes and Cesc Fabregas with an 82nd minute penalty.

However, they played half the match with 10 men following the dismissal of centre-back Thomas Vermaelen who was harshly sent off after Guillermo Franco went down under his challenge in the box just before the break.

Alessandro Diamanti then saw Arsenal’s Manuel Almunia save his penalty, although the goalkeeper escaped censure from the officials after clearly moving off his line before the kick was taken.

The defeat left West Ham in 17th place just three points above the relegation zone.
