It has left skipper Gerrard convinced third place is up for grabs if his Anfield side keep up the form which has meant not conceding a league goal in four games.

Steven Gerrard reckons Arsenal’s ‘wounded animals’ are about to get another savaging - now his re-born Reds have rediscovered their taste for a scrap.

He said: “Arsenal will be a bit of a wounded animal. We’ve got to do what Chelsea and Manchester United did, give them little space and hit them on the counter.

“It’s a massive game for us and the target is to get a result where we can push on and try and get third place.

“Our target is a top-four finish but if Arsenal give us any sniff of catching them then we want to grab it.

Dirk Kuyt’s 50th goal for the Reds ensured Rafael Benitez’s men moved into the top four for the first time since October - and the skipper believes the Reds are now in the mood to continue their excellent recent run when they travel to Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two games.

“It was a tough derby with passion, committment and plenty of fight from both sides,” said Gerrard. “We have beaten a good Everton side today with ten men and the boys should take a lot of credit.

“They have been on a fantastic run but we have beaten them with ten men and played some good football, so we’re really pleased.

“Our attitude was great and we stuck together. We always knew we’d be up against it today but we knew we could get chances from set-pieces, especially when you have players like Dirk Kuyt on the field.”

Both sides ended the game with ten men after Sotirios Kyrgiakos saw red in the first half and Steven Pienaar was dismissed in stoppage time, but Gerrard insists referee Martin Atkinson gave the game every chance to flow.

“I thought the referee was superb today,” he added. “Fans come to games wanting to see passion and fight from players. There were some mis-timed tackles out there, but we won’t be complaining about the referee. (continue reading…)

“He knows he has to improve and wants to do it and some full weeks’ training will make things better.

“If you are injured and have to start again, and injured and have to start again, then it’s difficult for any player, be it Gerrard, Torres, Benayoun or whoever.

“Consistency of form is something you can only find when you train every week, and have positive training sessions in a row.

You only had to look at Liverpool’s starting line-up at Stoke City yesterday to see the size of the problem facing one of our biggest and most famous clubs. What is there without Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard? Not a lot, apart from a very good goalkeeper in Pepe Reina.

Over the years, teams have been intimidated by Liverpool before the game has even kicked off. By contrast, Stoke would have fancied their chances strongly when the team sheet was pinned up with the names of Philipp Degen, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Fabio Aurelio.

Even when Liverpool were 1-0 up, you were never remotely confident they could close out the game - they just don’t have that sort of resilience any more.

A late equaliser conceded, from a set-piece almost inevitably, summed it up. Gerrard was watching on from the stands and I wonder what he was thinking.

At one time, the idea of him wanting to leave Anfield would have been unthinkable.

Even when he was seriously tempted by Chelsea at the height of his powers, he couldn’t take that final step to leave his home-town club. But what if a big club come in at the end of the season and offer Champions League football? I am not sure any more. I think even at this stage he will probably be considering his position. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is ready to quit the club he joined as a nineyear- old two decades ago.

The England midfielder, who suffered a hamstring injury in the humiliating FA Cup defeat by Reading in midweek, looked a lonely and dejected figure as he sat in the stands at Stoke City yesterday and watched his team held to a 1-1 Premier League draw.

The result did little to help under-pressure manager Rafael Benitez as he battles to convince critics his team can salvage their season by gaining what is looking an unlikely Champions League place next season.

And it will not have helped Gerrard’s mood as he wrestles with the dilemma of whether to stay with his home-town club and accept the frustration of yet another campaign without a major honour, or cash in on the final years of his career with a 40million move this summer.

He will have no lack of suitors, with Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan and Premier League big spenders Manchester City believed to be interested in a deal.

Gerrard’s discontent at Anfield has been obvious in a season when Benitez has again failed to mount a meaningful campaign for the championship and has struggled even to convince fans that a Champions League place is within Liverpool’s reach.

That failure has left the manager open to speculation about his own future, and Gerrard ready to leave the club where he is held in such reverence by the Kop. (continue reading…)
